The Philippine Youth Representative to the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UN CSW68), Mandy Romero, recently told the UN Plenary in New York City to invest in girls, and watch it change the world. “The classroom is a microcosm of our future as a country. Every program and policy must be centered on equity and diversity to break intergenerational cycles of poverty. Invest in girls, and watch it change the world,” Romero said.
Romero, daughter of 1PACMAN Partylist Rep. Michael Romero, is this year’s Philippine Youth Representative to the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UN CSW68) taking place in New York City from March 11-22.
“So very very proud of our daughter Mandy Romero, as she gives her speech today on CSW68 at the United Nations Plenary, UN Headquarters in New York City. She is the Youth Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations for 2024 and delivered her proudest moment for our country during her speech,” Rep. Romero said.
During her speech, Mandy underscored the importance of the fight against poverty as it gives women and girls more space by providing them the platform to create solutions and linkages across the government and basic sectors.
Mandy also gave emphasis on commitments in strengthening gender equality protections, women empowerment, and poverty reduction under the UN CSW68 priority theme “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.”
Before her UN commitment, Mandy, also of 1PACMAN Partylist, commended the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) for pushing gender equality in governance at the NAPC’s kick-off celebration of the National Women’s Month at the LWUA Auditorium in Quezon City.
During the launching NAPC Secretary Lope Santos III, Undersecretary Girlie Amarillo, and Vice Chairperson for the Basic Sectors Ruperto Aleroza expressed their support for Romero and gave the Philippine delegation additional insights on the national poverty situation from a gender perspective.
The women’s month launch was also attended by the NAPC Secretariat together with Head Executive Assistant Mary Rose Villaflor, Local Affairs Coordinating and Monitoring Service Director III Alexis Lapiz, Board Secretary Malou Reyes, and 1PACMAN Partylist Chief of Staff Atty. John Paul Ronquillo and Communications Head Fatsen Amano.
